Piwakawaka is the Māori name for the friendly little 'Fantail' native bird, a regular visitor to the hut. The name was chosen for the house and the hut because they playfully greeted us on our first day on the land with their gregarious and playful welcome, flitting around us as we wandered through our stand of the native bush where the hut is located. We hope our guests get to enjoy the same warm greeting when staying at Piwakawaka Hut.
The stylishly decorated one-room, off-grid glamping hut is located on the Banks Peninsula, 1 hour and 15 minutes from Christchurch and 15 minutes from Akaroa. The hut is set on a hillside and is a short 100m walk from the parking area. This is a magical spot with beautiful views of the ocean and surrounding farmland hills. Pipers Valley stream runs nearby and native bush, alive with native birds, surrounds the hut. A large Totara, over 200 years old, shades the area on hot summer days.
The balcony captures the views from the front of the hut and is a magical place to sit with a glass of wine in the evening. Enjoy watching the sunset over the bay, lighting up the contours of French Peak in the distance.
Inside the hut you will find a double bed, comfortable seating and tea and coffee-making facilities. A covered outdoor kitchen for preparing and cooking food is set a few steps away.
Piwakawaka Hut truly is a magical, romantic escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, the perfect spot to unwind, disconnect and relax.

About your host, Piers
Your hosts at Piwakawaka Hut are Piers and Nick, along with dog Lily Blue and a number of pet farm animals.
Piers and Nick first saw the property online when they were living in San Francisco and immediately fell in love with the location and the magnificent views. They loved the idea of the quieter life that the Banks Peninsula could offer them after a busy few years of travelling and living internationally in Australia, Germany, England and California. The property in Duvauchelle ticked all the boxes - beautiful location, near the lovely small town of Akaroa and only one hour and twenty minutes from Christchurch and its international airport.
Nick is an IT Program Manager and Piers looks after the property and the animals.
Piwakawaka Hut was originally built as extra accommodation for family and friends - who soon suggested that other guests would enjoy it!
