We have two holiday houses on the farm: the Villa, which is the original farm house set in large grounds, and the Retreat, a 3 1/2 storey architect designed house built in the 1970s by my husband, an architect and a school teacher. The Retreat is very private, set in a stand of 1000 year old native ...

Unique kiwi experiences for you

We have a horse stud on the property, owned by our son and daughter-in-law, so at certain times of the year there are foals to be visited.
We are 10 minutes from Awastone Rafting Centre and café, where you can have rafting or kayaking excursions, and enjoy a delicious bar meal at the Café.

Reviews

Great location, friendly helpful hosts, fascinating house with fabulous views. Had everything we needed for our 4 night stay to explore the region.

Our family group of 5 plus a toddler plus family dog had a very relaxing break away. We especially loved the huge lawns with the beautiful tall trees that provided cool shade on hot afternoons. The villa was quaint and quirky, very comfortable and spacious. We spent most of our indoors time in the very well equipped kitchen and dining room as 2 of our group found their allergies flared up when in the lounge. Unfortunately the rivers (on the farm and nearby) were unsuitable for swimming at this time, but we still had a great holiday. Our hosts were very welcoming - many thanks.

About your host, Sue

Sue's Photo

We, Sue & David, have been hosting people for 35 years. We are fortunate to have our son Matt and daughter-in-law Leonie, who have a Sport Horse Stud, now living on the farm, so it is really a family business. They help us with the hosting, taking total control during the winter months when David and I guide people in Europe. That is our "winter" business, but of course it will not be possible to travel there this year so we will be looking forward to hosting fellow New Zealanders here at home!

Questions and Answers

Question: HI there, The retreat looks like a gorgeous place to stay. Just 1 question, I am looking at making a booking for 2 adults and 3 children for 2 nights in May (26 and 27). Is there a blanket fee for adults and children? Or is there a children's rate? Thanks
asked by Toby on 17/04/2023 20:45

Answer: Hi Toby There is a half price rate for children under 14. But the house is not really suitable for very young children as the twin bedroom is up a vertical ladder! I guess it depends if your children are adventurous or not! Cheers Sue
